Located at the foothills of the Northern Black Hills and near the Semi-Arid High Plains to the north, Three Peaks Ranch enjoys a distinctive climate for its geographical position. Following the Köppen climate classification, the area exhibits a Humid Subtropical Climate (Cfa), closely verging on a Mediterranean-influenced Continental Climate (Dsa) due to the notably dry summers.
The climate at Three Peaks Ranch features four distinct seasons: hot and dry summers, mild autumns and springs, and winters that are moderately cold with snowfall. Winter conditions are often mitigated by warm Chinook winds descending into the valley from the Northern Hills, leading to unexpectedly mild days, with temperatures sometimes reaching 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit in January and February and snow rarely persisting in the valley.
Aside from occasional cold snaps in winter and heat waves in summer, the weather at Three Peaks Ranch is generally temperate, making it a pleasant place to live or visit throughout the year. Its climate is comparable to Salt Lake City, Utah, which is similarly situated in a transitional zone.
